About KODONGKLAN

KODONGKLAN is what happens when seven already-busy Nairobi-grown voices decide the city deserves a collective, not a feature list, not a “supergroup” for headlines, but a shared lane where individual stars agree to orbit the same groove. Formed around May 2024, the Klan brings together Bensoul, Okello Max, Charisma, Mordecai Dex, Coster Ojwang, Ywaya Tajiri, and Israel Onyach, artists with their own careers, aesthetics, and audiences, choosing collaboration as a creative reset rather than a career requirement.

Their earliest releases moved like a statement of intent: high-energy, tightly arranged, and more interested in momentum than ego. The debut single “Okra Water” (July 2024) arrived with a playful relationship to pop culture, nostalgia, and sampling, a track that felt like a wink to the timelines while still sounding engineered for sweaty speakers. They followed with “Kodong,” doubling down on the idea that the group’s language is the dancefloor, you know, that sweet spot where Kenyan memory (hooks you grew up hearing) meets the now (the drum patterns, the tempo, the attitude).

The real arrival, though, was their debut album Disko (released December 2024): a 14-track, roughly hour-long ride that treats Nairobi like both muse and mirror. The album covers thematic elements around love, adversity, late nights, small wins, big feelings, and the stubborn insistence on joy even when everything outside the club doors is heavy. The title track “Disko” leans into Kenyan rhythmic DNA (with Ohangla/Benga energy in the bloodstream) and shows the Klan’s core thesis: this is a group of singers living in a shared world, built to feel communal.

Part of what makes Kodongklan compelling is the quiet flex of their line-up. Onyach and Ywaya also operate as the duo Watendawili, while Mordecai Dex is known for his work as part of H_art the Band. Their combined histories bring songwriting depth and stage maturity into the Klan’s palette. But Kodongklan’s magic is that none of that pedigree becomes baggage. The collective works because it sounds like a single idea: seven voices, one party, disciplined enough to move as a unit, loose enough to let each personality shine through the cracks.
